The Sunroom

The best place in Port Douglas for exquisite food, delicious cocktails and ice cold craft beers.

The sunroom lounge is a wine focussed tapas restaurant. Our food menu was designed to pair beautifully with wine. We pride ourselves on our extensive wine list, with wines from all over the globe, organic wine, cellar aged wines and plenty of small boutique producers. You will notice our passion for service and our continued effort to deliver a the best possible service.

The sunroom lounge is the sister venue to The Conservatory Bar in Cairns – which boasts over 800 wines and a ‘2 wine glass’ award from the Wine list of the year award show. You will certainly notice the similarities between the 2 venues.

OMG Easily the best tapas I’ve ever had! The manager was so helpful, and oh the selection of wine. A real must if you are in Port Douglas. We visited late and she created a masterpiece for us. Many thanks.

New exceptional tapas and wine in Port Douglas It is very hard to get a booking in any decent restaurant without booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance. The Sunroom is a new addition to Port Douglas high end restaurant. Just open and still easy to get in. The formula of wine bar with tapas is well known, but both food and wines are exceptional. It is more European and less Spanish who invented the concept. The whipped feta with pears and chilly honey is to die for.Ross Stevens, the owner has a cellar in excess of 250 different wines. He is an expert, the grandson of a wine maker in Bordeaux… He will match wine with your dishes. Let him choose for you. You will get wines not even on the menu and a perfect match at a reasonable price. He is such a nice guy. Bred with good wine and good food, he will pass his enthusiasm to your party and you will enjoy a memorable night.

Great wine bar This is a new business in Port Douglas and one well needed. Good wine list and great food platters. Only open a couple of nights per week at present but hopefully this will change soon.

Best wine and tapas in Port Douglas My partner and I recently visited the new Sunroom Lounge in Port Douglas, and we were blown away by the food, wine, service and ambience. The venue is sophisticated but relaxing, and we immediately felt welcomed by the owner and his team. The wine list is the best I’ve seen in either Port Douglas or Cairns, and this is complemented by the knowledge and enthusiasm the owner has for the wine in the lounge. In the end we asked the owner to pick the wines and they were superb. For food we went with the tasting menu , a sort of mini degustation (which can come with paired wines). The portions were a generous size and the taste was amazing. We had a wonderful time, made all the better for the professional and friendly service provided. We’ll be back!

What a Great Venue for Tapas and Wine Literally surprised at how this venue presented itself. Food was awesome and the selection of wines left me confused. Luckily the sommelier helped me find the perfect Pionot. Will be back…

Venue Manager Maddy

Maddy grew up in the beautiful wine region of south Gippsland, where she fell in love with wine – its history, cultivation and creation.

For Maddy, every wine ever made is like a time capsule in a bottle. Each individual wine telling a story of time and place, of the hands that tended to the vines, of the uniqueness and expression of the terrain and how this is transformed by the artistry
of winemaking.

Maddy started learning about the hospitality and wine industry at 18 when she worked for Young Gun Winemaker of the Year nominee Marcus Satchell and his wife Lisa Sartori of Dirty Three Wines.

Over the next three years, she was involved in all aspects of the wine making process, from shoot thinning, to lawnmowing the vineyard, picking and processing the fruit, blending and bottling the wine, watching and waiting as it transformed and finally to the joy of tasting the magic. She also sold the final product at the Cellar Door.

Next Maddy joined the wine team at Vinomofo before working as the marketing consultant and vineyard hand at Rob Hall Wines. Her experience includes roles with Levantine Hill in the Yarra Valley, events such as Pinot Palooza in Melbourne and Sydney and the Gippsland Wine Awards, where she worked as a Steward.

Maddy takes her her job very seriously and explains “I love creating and preparing the tapas served at the Sunroom, welcoming my customers and providing them with a personalised experience of the harmony of excellent food with great wine. Come visit me at the Sunroom so I can help you pair your palate with the perfect vino!”

Ross

Ross Stevens grew up in the UK, where his grandfather was a wine collector. He’s had a stint at being a winemaker as well, picking up several awards, so it’s fair to say appreciating wine is a family tradition.

Having settled in Cairns some years ago, Ross has become a big fan of Australian wines which he believes benefit from the extraordinary freedom our winemakers have to create and produce some truly incredible stuff. With less top-down industry restrictions, huge climatic variation and an amazingly diverse landscape, Australia is able to produce a broader range of varietals in a wide array of styles than the old-world producing nations. “Go to wineries in Tuscany, and you’ll spend the rest of your life drinking Sangiovese, whereas, in Australia, you could have a winery in the Barossa and be tired of making Shiraz, so they think, let’s give Zinfandel a go!” he says.

Ross is never happier than when he’s talking drinks and he has the smarts to back up the passion. He is the perfect person to explain the qualities of old Burgundy and to give you a crash course on the subtleties of fiano or assyrtiko, skin contact, natural wine, or which wine goes best with generous chunks of red Leicester. He brings all this wisdom with a dash of English charm to his work managing the Sunroom Lounge and the Sunset Bar where he oversees an extensive cocktail menu, a wide variety of craft beers and very impressive wine list.
